T A L E

 The idea for a Brewing Company was inspired by a great thirst that comes from two decades of geological exploration in the African bushveld and beyond by a group of explorers who were rather fond of the shared ritual of beer and bush tales around the campfire. Mineral Services, the founding company of Hoghouse,  already had a much loved mascot that was a natural choice to use for the Hoghouse Brewing Company’s identity, warthogs being legendary little beasts with remarkable grit and spirit.

V E N U E

At Hoghouse in Ndabeni, we tap our ales directly from the cold room below to the custom made taps upstairs. The simple, industrial style tap room overlooks the brewery. Fresh, unpasteurised beer can be enjoyed in the evenings with the Afro-Texan style barbeque from the smokehouse downstairs. We also converted an old exploration Toyota Land Cruiser “Dingaan” who has travelled the length and breadth of the subcontinent into a cold room on wheels – a unique mobile tap room. We take our beloved ‘DINGAAN’ on the road for mobile events and for private functions.

E N V I R O M E N T A L

The brewery was built with environmentally considerate practices, re-purposing materials where possible, utilising a rainwater capture system for cleaning water and a heat exchange unit to reduce energy consumption for brewing and refrigeration. Our spent grain is taken to a nearby farm and used as animal feed. Enjoying a Hoghouse beer directly from the taproom above the brewery or in the restaurant, ensures that your beer has not been transported anywhere, nor required any packaging. Possibly the greenest way to enjoy your pint.

B E E R S

We currently have six signature ales : an African Pale Ale, Witbier, Saison, Porter, IPA, and Amber Ale. Private tastings can be arranged and we are happy to accommodate enthusiasts [by appointment] who are interested in how we brew.  We offer Brewery visits on a Monday and Friday at 4:30pm by prior arrangement. The Taproom venue is also available for private hire.

T E A M

Our approach to brewing is collaborative. Tom Nowicki is our Brewing Director overseeing recipe development, quality control, brewing strategy and all things scientific. Tom is a geologist and expert in the field of diamond exploration and evaluation. Brewing beer is his yang to a very specialised yin. Byron Damonze, the Brewer and a former student of politics and psychology, runs the daily brewing operations under Tom’s guidance. Emma Emanuel, from KZN has recently joined as our assistant Brewer. Sommelier Joakim Hansi Blackadder brings his talented Swedish palate to development and quality management including sales and distribution for the brewery. Chef PJ Vadas works creatively with the team to align the Hoghouse brand and flavours by tasting loads of beer, naturally.
