After exploding onto the Cape Town scene as Hoghouse Brewing Company in 2015, Hoghouse BBQ & Bakery opened its doors at Spier Wine Farm in the historic Jonkershuis later that year. After a winter break in 2016, they reopened with new vigor and an all new Texas-style concept barbeque offering.

In addition to their popular wood fired oven pastries and breads as well as artisanal beer on tap, guests are now treated to a selection of “low and slow” meats from their gigantic pitch-black smoker. Various cuts are offered including beef brisket, lamb belly rib and pulled pork – some being smoked for as long as 18 hours.

The setting at The Werf at Spier is pure magic: shaded tables adjacent a massive, perfectly manicured, lush green lawn with huge oak trees. Acclaimed chef PJ Vadas (previously of the Roundhouse in Camps Bay and Camphors at Vergelegen) knows what he’s doing in the kitchen and on the coals. His background in fine dining paved the way for food that is far less fancy but shines like a shooting star in the flavour department.

The jam-packed lunch menu at Hoghouse BBQ & Bakery consists of snacks (think bread and charcuterie boards, tortilla chips and guacamole, fiery jalapeno poppers and Scotch eggs), barbeque (everything from brisket burnt ends to pork spare ribs and buttermilk fried chicken) and sides (braaibroodjies, ceasar salad, corn on the cob, hand cut chips and much more). Place your BBQ order in weight starting from 100g, and you can build your own family-style platter with a little of everything to get any party started. By the way, the spicy pulled pork bun is highly recommended and shouldn’t be missed.

For families with young kids, Hoghouse BBQ & Bakery is the perfect spot to find sanctity. Sip on a beer tasting while watching your children play on the lawn, order them some nachos or burgers and top it off with dreamy caramel ice cream served in sugar cones.

For breakfast, feast on flaky pain au chocolat, charred pasteis de nata, croque monsieur or the Farmer Angus Breakfast that changes daily. Homemade granola, smoothies, patisserie and breads round off the delicious offerings along with a long list of coffees, teas and infusions.

Hoghouse BBQ & Bakery is not only a great weekend eatery destination, but an excellent option for daily breakfast or lunch (dinner now also served on Thu/Fri/Sat). The vibe is trendy yet tranquil, the pricing is decent and you’re going to want to return to taste everything on the BBQ menu. It’s a go-to venue for locals where they can show off the beauty of the region to visiting friends while enjoying some flipping fantastic food and quality time with the whole family.
